Designer Kitchen Lighting Formula

📐 The Bulletproof Formula for Perfect Kitchen Pendant Lighting 📐

Ever hang kitchen pendants only to realize they look too small, too low, or completely off-center? You aren't alone. Getting the scale and spacing right is one of the trickiest parts of kitchen design.

Save this exact formula for your next project portfolio or client presentation:

1. The Height Rule (Floor to Bottom)

  • The Magic Number: 30 to 36 inches from the top of the countertop to the bottom of the light fixture.

  • Designer Tip: If your client is taller than 6 feet, lean toward 36 inches to keep their sightlines completely clear while prepping or socializing.

2. The Spacing Formula (Pendant to Pendant)

  • The Magic Number: 24 to 30 inches apart from each other.

  • This ensures the light overlaps perfectly across the island without creating harsh shadows or crowded clusters.

3. The Boundary Rule (Pendant to Edge)

  • The Magic Number: Keep pendants at least 6 inches (ideally 12 inches) away from the edge of the island counter.

  • Hanging fixtures too close to the edge makes the space feel restricted and risks someone bumping into them.

4. The Scale Check (Size of Pendant)

  • The Formula: Measure the width of your island in inches and subtract 12. That number is the maximum combined width of your pendants.

  • Example: For a 60-inch island, 60 - 12 = 48 inches. If you want 2 pendants, each should be no wider than 24 inches.
